Vesheda by the Needles in The Solent

J Class REGATTA
-SOLENT 18-21 July

The Solent Regatta will be hosted by the The Royal Southampton Yacht Club (RSYC). The Solent was the traditional home of J Class racing in the UK during the 1930s. Three races are planned, one starting in the Western Solent and around Christchurch bay. One starting in the eastern Solent and into Hayling Bay, and a third in the central Solent.

The Fleet will all be based together at Ocean Village, Southampton, one of the few deep water facilities in the Solent which can berth J Class yachts, each around 140 feet overall and drawing 16 feet. Five yachts have entered this Solent Series: Endeavour, Velsheda, Ranger, Lionheart and Rainbow. Four yachts will be based in and around Ocean Village. Endeavour may plan to berth in the vicinity of Cowes.

The Hundred Guinea Cup Race 21st July 2012

The last race, again hosted by RSYC, will start on the RYS line off Cowes, and will be sailed over the original clockwise course around the Isle of Wight, for the 1851 Hundred Guinea Cup Race, which is now known as the “America’s Cup”.

These J Class events will attract many thousands of spectators. There are numerous headlands and vantage points close to the race courses for viewing this spectacular fleet.

David Pitman, Secretary of the J Class Association explained: “The Royal Southampton Yacht Club was selected because of the Club’s deep experience of organising and running major racing regattas, it’s great onshore facilities and close historic ties to the J Class fleet. We are delighted RSYC is hosting the 2012 Solent Regatta and are looking forward to spectacular, close racing.
Sue Lamb, Royal Southampton Commodore, said: “We are extremely proud to be hosting the prestigious Solent Regatta and the Hundred Guinea Cup in 2012 for the largest J Class fleet ever seen on their ‘home waters’. We also look forward to welcoming everyone at our Ocean Village Clubhouse and at Gins, our Clubhouse on the Beaulieu River.”
